The late Alexander McQueen was one of the greatest fashion designers of the century. Do we think that’s an overstatement? Absolutely not.
McQueen not only had extraordinary technical, design, and tailoring skills but always found a way to transform the ordinary runway into an awe-inspiring, and even sometimes fear-provoking, experiences. Most of which left other designers and their shows in the dust.
His designs and his presentations of them had a transformative ability. One that was not easily forgotten. That was his genius: transforming beauty. And he did it with such elegance and grace that less fortunate souls were forced to believe he was born under a luck star.
Many of his shows turned theatrical. One of the most iconic and memorable, for many in the fashion world, was when he turned the runway into a wind tunnel and had his models fight their way down it, struggling so much it seemed sure they would fall over. All the while yards of fabric blew ethereally behind them, dramatically juxtaposing the battle against the wind. Or, how about when he presented a model with a white dress and as she danced around she was blasted by paint machines – the kind normally used to paint cars.
What’s more, his pieces didn’t stop at the aesthetic aspect. They made statements, statements about the economy, about waste, about rape. They dealt with dark themes such as witchcraft and capital punishment. But brilliantly, as he was unearthing these heavy subjects, he draped them and recast them into things of sartorial beauty.
One thing we most admire is that McQueen’s artistry and ambitions remained unchecked by commercial influence, and he seemed to never lose his childlike wonder. McQueen was an artist in every sense of the word.
He had the talent. He had the vision. And he created dreams for us. We hope in a way, by sharing some of our favorite iconic looks from Alexander McQueen, we help his dreams live on.
