Competition is a part of human behavior. We want to challenge ourselves, we want to challenge each other. Before The Guinness Book of World Records came along in 1955, it is easy to imagine disputes arising in pubs all over the world as to who held the longest, greatest, biggest, highest accomplishment. Today, with a new edition published each year, we can now squash these disputes… no matter how ridiculous them may seem. We compiled a fun list of our favorite fashion world records. Enjoy!
LONGEST FASHION SHOW – 24 HOURS 28 SECONDS
A 24-hour fashion show is one of those crazy world record things people do, not necessarily to create a world record, but because they are eccentric and passionate. However, the inception of the idea is purely speculative. What we do know, is that on Nov. 8th, 2014, Cotton held the longest running fashion show in history in Miami, FL. The models wore outfits designed entirely of the fabric, there was 60 models, 75 designers, and a total of 1,440 looks throughout the show.
LARGEST FASHION SHOW – 2 MILLION PEOPLE
Remember when Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show broke the internet? Wait… that might be every year. Regardless, this was one of those moments. They first started streaming the show online in 1999, but in 2000 more than 2 million people tuned in, or logged in, to watch the iconic fashion show. That particular year, the show was moved from the Plaza in February to a May event in concert with the Cannes Film Festival in France to raise money for the Cinema Against AIDS charity. The event raised $3.5 million.
Fun fact: the bra worn by Gisele Bündchen in this 2000 Fashion Show holds its own Guinness World Record for the most expensive item of lingerie ever created. The price tag: $15 million.
LARGEST BOW WORN – 42.5 INCHES WIDE
We can’t be certain, but the World’s Largest Bow Worn might be a contended record. This is a picture from Pintrest captioned, “Who holds the record for biggest bow now, Guinness?” According to The Guinness Book of World Records, a young girl in Nebraska holds the record. She is said to have created a massive bow, over 40 inches wide, with her friend.
LARGEST SHOWCASE OF CHOCOLATE DRESSES – 23
Now that’s one tasty looking dress! It is a wonder what they did with these dresses after the show. On any note, the holder of this extraordinarily delicious record is Le Salon du Chocolat. The event showcased 23 chocolate outfits, and was held on Oct. 30th, 2008, in Paris, France.
FASTEST 100 YARD DASH IN A DRESS AND HEELS – 22 SECONDS
In Amarillo, Texas, in 2012, a wondrous thing happened. A man, called Tommy The Hacker and who worked for KissFM, ran a 100 yard dash while wearing a dress and high heels in 22 seconds flat. Tommy, you’re our hero!
OLDEST PROFESSIONAL FASHION MODEL – 88 YEARS OLD
People tend to think of models as having a cushy job, and while there are some absolute perks, it comes with its own set of challenges and pressures. One such pressure, which many models know quite well, is the pressure to stay young. The industry overflows with new incomings models and fresh faces every year. That’s why we think Daphne Selfe is so extremely cool. Selfe is from the United Kingdom and has been modeling for over 60 years. Go get ‘em girl!
LONGEST TIME OWNING A PAIR OF SHOES – 36 YEARS
If we could make our shoes last this long we’d be millionaires. This very practical Canadian man wore the same pair of shoes for 36 years. It is reported they kept their shape nicely. Now, who made these shoes? That’s our question.
MOST MODELS IN A FASHION SHOW
If you can see in the picture it says “The World’s Greatest Catwalk 2012, Hong Kong.” And if by “greatest” they meant “the most models ever in a fashion show,” then, yes! It was absolutely, hands-down, the greatest catwalk ever. The accolades of Most Models in a Fashion Show, go to The Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association who had 343 models in its 2012 show.
MOST BUTTONS USED TO MAKE A VEST – 4,702
This particular fashion world record really gets our curiosity going. Did he just want a really cool vest to wear, and all he had was buttons? We may never know. Vika S. created his world record setting vest with 4,702 buttons. The vest measures 24 inches long and 40 inches wide.
LONGEST RUNWAY – 2 MILES
The 2-mile catwalk took the models 45 minutes to walk. This record holding event marks the second for the Hong Kong Fashion Designer’s Association, and happened the same year they scored for Most Models on a Runway (343). Is it any wonder, with that many models, that you’d need a huge catwalk.
LONGEST WEDDING DRESS TRAIN – 9,842.52 FEET
It is our guess that Jing Mei set out to shatter the record for Longest Wedding Dress Train, as she surpassed the prior record by more than a mile. It’s going to take another ambitious bride to take this record from Mei.
Now it’s your turn. Let’s see you get out there and set some fashion records!
